Credit Analyst

The credit skills required for this position are the ability to:

  • Use accrual financial statements or business income tax returns, personal income tax returns, and available information about borrower management and competitive forces at work in the borrower's marketplace to identify for a proposed new credit or credit renewal the 1) borrowing causes, 2) likely cash sources of repayments, 3) risks to each cash source of repayment, and 4) relevant mitigants for each risk so identified.

A Credit Analyst usually performs these tasks under the supervision and guidance of more senior credit professionals in the organization.

In job postings, the position may be referred to as "Credit Analyst", "Credit Analyst I", or "Junior Underwriter".


Senior Credit Analyst

The credit skills required for this position include those required for a Credit Analyst enhanced by greater experience and competence in:

  • Assessing a wider array of business borrowers
  • Applying the Uniform Credit Analysis (UCA) cash flow statement in the credit assessment process routinely
  • Shaping pragmatic projection scenarios
  • Assessing management competence
  • Identifying risks to cash repayment sources
  • Structuring mitigants to such risks

A Senior Credit Analyst is able to complete all these analytical tasks without supervision or guidance.

In job postings, the position may be referred to as "Credit Analyst II" or "Senior Underwriter".


Loan Review Officer

The credit skills required for this position are identical to those required for a Senior Credit Analyst.


Portfolio Manager

The credit skills required for this position are identical to those required for a Senior Credit Analyst.

The Portfolio Manager is responsible for client relationships within his or her portfolio of credits. He or she is equally responsible for, and involved in, developing the credit risk assessment that supports the credit requests of portfolio clients.

In job postings, the position may be referred to as "Account Officer", "Loan Officer", "Commercial Lender" or "Relationship Manager" in which the occupant has responsibility for both client relationships and the credit quality of such clients.

  • Properly determine if the prospect or borrower appears sufficiently credit worthy to conduct an in-depth credit assessment by credit professionals in the organization

The Business Banker is responsible for client relationships and business generation, but he or she is not responsible for, or involved in, developing the credit risk assessment that supports credit decisions.

In job postings, the position may be referred to as "Business Development Officer", "Account Officer", "Loan Officer", "Commercial Lender" or "Relationship Manager" in which the occupant has primary responsibility for client relationships but no direct responsibility for the credit quality of such clients.


Branch Manager

The credit skills appropriate for this position are the ability to:

  • Identify key credit risk issues for a proposed new credit or for a credit renewal.
  • Properly determine if the prospect or borrower appears sufficiently credit worthy to conduct an in-depth credit assessment by branch office credit professionals or by other credit professionals that support branch office operations.

Board Member

The credit skills appropriate for this position are the ability to:

  • Understand relevant credit risk issues for proposed new credits or for credit renewals brought to the Board for information or review.
