Portfolio Manager
Commercial Business Underwriting

Provide courses necessary to equip a professional - who completes all Learning Path courses and tests - with the credit skills necessary to independently underwrite commercial loan requests for clients across numerous business sectors as well as provide supervision and guidance for less experience analysts in doing so.

A professional in pursuit of a Portfolio Manager position may not have mastered all the credit skills required of a Credit Analyst, depending on experience and background. Consequently, the Learning Path accounts for this possibility as well as provides courses that allow a professional to reinforce and expand his or her knowledge and use of the UCA cash flow statement in the underwriting process.

Note, too, that the Learning Path provides courses that allow a professional to develop analytical capabilities in several specialty lending fields.

Coursework Path
Step 1: Credit College Series on Cash Flow Statements and Cash Flow Proxies
Step 3: Quick Hits on Federal Tax Returns Issues
Step 4: Selected Specialty Lending Webinars

The Credit College on Cash Flow Statements and Cash Flow Proxies explores in detail the use and limitations of cash flow statements - the UCA cash flow statement and the FASB 95 statement of cash flows - and cash flow proxies - traditional "cash flow" and EBITDA - in assessing the past and projected financial position and risk profile of a borrower. It builds on, complements, and significantly extends the cash flow techniques explored in the Learning Path coursework for a Credit Analyst.

The six Webinars address such critical analytical issues as the relationship between cash flow and working capital, the structure and use of global cash flow, the relationship between debt capacity and cash flow, complex financial statements and the appropriate cash flow structure, and the use of covenants to control cash outflows from a borrower to its owners or partners.

The eight Quick Hits on federal tax returns provide a status check on a professional's knowledge of the use of federal income tax returns in properly computing and assessing borrower performance ratios, cash flow proxies, and cash flow statements.

  • A Quick Hit falls into the micro learning category. To complete this 30 minute exercise, a participant accesses a Quick Hit via login and password information, reviews the brief two or three page document, and completes a five question online review quiz, which is immediately scored and returned.

A cumulative review quiz score of 80% or higher for the eight Quick Hits indicates sufficient mastery of the material to forego the eight session live or recorded Credit College on Using Federal Tax Returns for Ratio and Cash Flow Analysis. This Credit College is a required course in the Learning Path for a Credit Analyst. Therefore, if a professional fails to achieve the 80% mastery level, he or should seriously consider taking, or re-taking, the course.

The specialty lending Webinars introduce and explore the analysis of contractors, medical practices, not for profit organizations, municipalities, and hospitals for those who wish to enhance their skills in assessing borrower risk for business operations in these sectors. However, to gain full benefit from the specialty lending Webinars, professionals on this Learning Path must first master the UCA cash flow statement and the use and application of federal tax returns in assessing borrower risk.
